The Red Light District: More Than Just Red Lights

A Little History

Amsterdam’s Red Light District (De Wallen) is one of the oldest and most fascinating parts of the city. Back in the day (we’re talking medieval times), this was already a buzzing trading hub where sailors docked after long sea voyages, looking for entertainment of all kinds. Over the centuries, the area evolved into a mix of historic charm, nightlife, and—let’s be honest—a magnet for the curious! But beyond the neon glow, this district holds centuries of stories, hidden alleyways, and some of the city’s most stunning architecture.

More Than Meets the Eye

One of the best-kept secrets of De Wallen is that De Wallen is the home to some of Amsterdam’s oldest buildings. Take the Oude Kerk, a breathtaking medieval church that has been watching over the district for nearly 800 years. Or the hidden courtyards that offer a moment of peace just steps away from the bustling streets. And if you’re peckish, you’ll find everything from traditional Dutch pubs to Michelin-star restaurants tucked between the canals.

Respect the Ladies

These ladies are hardworking professionals, so they deserve our respect! If anyone knows the ins and outs of this district, it’s Louise and Martine Fokkens. These twin sisters worked here for over 50 years and wrote the book Ouwehoeren, filled with stories of life behind the windows. Their tales paint a picture of resilience, humor, and a side of the Red Light District that most people never get to see. If you’re interested in the dynamics behind the curtains, this is a must read!

Exploring Like a Pro

De Wallen is best enjoyed with a relaxed mindset—wander the alleys, soak in the history, and appreciate the unique mix of old and new. If the streets get a little too crowded, no worries, just come back a little later! Amsterdam rewards those who explore. And while you’re here, maybe best to be respectful and leave the camera tucked away. Some moments are best enjoyed without a lens between you and the experience. 😉
